RETIREMENT – FIRST LEG – BRISBANE TO ADELAIDE 2014

18 FEB TO 28 JUNE 2014

Well a lot has happened since the last post on this blog, so here’s a brief summary;

We eventually had everything fixed to our satisfaction on the van then had it serviced by Vehicle Components.  We purchased a house at Cooloola Cove which is in the process of being rented out while we travel around Oz for however long it takes, years hopefully.  This will also supplement our income while travelling.

Home Sweet Home

Our first trip away was down to Copeton Waters with Laurie & Helen for 5 days or so.  An absolutely beautiful spot to camp & fish, but as usual we didn’t catch anything of note.

From Copeton Waters we headed for Tyndale near Grafton.  We stopped a couple of nights at a free camp Cangai Bridge.  What a beautiful spot.  No facilities of any kind but a nice peaceful, serene spot to chill out for a few days right on the Mann River.

For over 12 months we had promised our old friends Bev & Trevor from our 4wding days that we would come & work with them in their roadhouse/restaurant/caravan park for a few weeks so we could learn the ropes & give them a few days break.  This experience will be quite useful should we decide to apply for work during our travels.  You never know we may get the urge. We now have experience in many types of fast food preparation, making all sorts of coffees, eftpos & cash register transactions, RMS systems used by caravan parks Australia wide, record keeping for cash & fuel usage etc. etc..  I also helped trevor build a pergola on the back of his house.  It was such a learning curve for both of us & being on our feet about 14 hours per day nearly killed us in the first week.  But eventually we got the hang of it & Bev & Trevor were able to go away for 4 days while we ran the place, and quite well if I do say so myself.  There were no disasters that I know of anyway.

We left Tyndale Monday 23rd June for our slow trip to Adelaide to enable us to arrive 19th July for our first ever house sit.  Our first night was Coffs Harbour showgrounds caravan park as we were booked in to get a new gas regulator fitted & the heater checked.

All good, we headed west and stayed at the Bellingen Show Grounds the following night.  A nice little town at the base of the ranges.  We went for a drive into what they call the promised lands & would compare it to Samford Valley near Brisbane.  The next morning we climbed up what seemed like a never ending assent up the Waterfall Way & had lunch at Dangar Falls.

Our destination for the night was to be Ebor Rest Area beside the recreation grounds and opposite the water falls.  A great little free camp with pit toilets.  The wind came up and we had a good frost overnight with temps getting below minus 4 outside.  Thank goodness for the gas heater & the good quality wool blanket we bought before leaving Brisbane.

We only went a short distance each day which was nice for a change and the next night was spent at the Styx State Forest camp ground by a small stream.  We had the pig blazing to keep warm but the cold night air eventually sent us inside to watch a movie.  The sat dish has also proven to be a good purchase giving us perfect TV whenever & wherever we want it.

We used to like stopping at the Dumeresque Dam at Armidale but some geniuses on the council decided to close it to all camping rather than try & manage it.  They obviously don’t need the income from grey nomads that many smaller towns now rely on.  So we continued on & spent a night at the Bendemeer Showgrounds for the huge sum of $5.  It was beside a picturesque stream & the pig was brought out again.  What a wonderful bit of gear it is when travelling in winter.

Our stopover for the 28th is the Coonabarabran Caravan Park.  This allows us to wash clothes, refill tanks & enjoy the luxuries of being on power for a night.  We’ve been driving into a strong headwind all day, so hopefully it will ease overnight.  It is now cold & overcast here, record snowfalls in the Victorian snowfields isn’t helping either.

29 June to 3 July 2014

Travelled a few hundred klms to Lake Mulwala at Kyffins Reserve. This would be a nice spot in nice weather with the lights of Yarrawonga & Mulwala on the opposite side of the lake. But it was drizzly, windy & cold so indoors was the go. We then moved to Forges Beach No.1 which is about 3.5klms west of Yarrawonga down a track beside the olive farm. It’s a beautiful free camp on the Murray with a sandy beach and fairly new drop toilets. There’s plenty of sunny spots here and not many people, as it’s winter, but likely a very popular spot in summer.

17 Feb to 11 March 2014: Brisbane (Sat dish issues) & Don’s 70th

Well we travelled back to Brissie in 2 days only to be told Springers couldn’t look at the van till Monday, even though we were told they would look at it Friday.  They eventually found the LNB gadget was out of wack by about 30 degrees, so they replaced the entire system, then all working well.  They tested the solar panels & found one of the so called good quality BHP panels had delaminated & the other one probably wasn’t far behind it, so off with them both & on with 2 new 140w panels giving us 545w in total.  No warranty as BHP Solar don’t exist anymore.  We had bought a Jack antenna on the way and wanted to mount it on the old Winegaurd base but unfortunately it was too close to the sat dish.  Springers suggested placing a Saturn 4000 antenna in between the new panels as it supposedly doesn’t have to be raised or rotated as it is omni-directional.  What a load of crap that turned out to be, no signal at all where we camped just out of Stanthorpe & everyone else with winegaurds had about 24 channels.  Once back at Lawnton we got some channels but not any of sevens which is the one we mostly use.  We want this to be working for places where you want local news or if the sat dish is obstructed.
We spent a week on a property near Stanthorpe where our friend Don was celebrating his 70th birthday. About 100 or so attended with many camping in vans, campers & tents.  It was a fantastic night with 4 fires burning, hot food supplied & a great band to boot.

We had planned to head up to Tin Can Bay via inland roads but headed back to our home base of Lawnton Showgrounds once again.  On the way near Warwick the fuel filter warning light came on & luckily I carry a spare.  With the assistance of Dennis Smith we changed the filter & continued on our way. I got up to check on the mounting of the Saturn antenna & noticed the roof had sagged under the sat dish causing the edge strip to pull away from the side wall.  Not happy Jan!!!  I had said to Paul at Springers that I was not happy with the way it was mounted & he assured me that there would be no problem.  Crap, double crap!!!!!

13 to 16 February 2014: Townsville to Charters Towers via Fletchers Creek

Went for walk around Bluewater township & through a bush track.  The ranger dropped in on our second morning & was recording everyone’s rego numbers.  It’s one of the few places I’ve actually seen anyone checking on length of stays & a couple of motor homes were here when we stopped in heading north over a week ago.  The signs state 24 hours but I thought they’d be a bit more flexible off season.
After 48 hrs hear we moved down Saunders Beach 13 klms away.  It’s a nice beach spot but the camping is restricted to 2 sides of a small gravel parking lot.  You need a tap key here as for some reason they don’t want you to access the town water.  Obviously, there’s no swimming due to crocs & stingers.  There is a bistro but we didn’t get to try it out as we only stayed one night, but you are allowed to stay 2.
It was Friday the next day & we had arranged to take the van to Townsville Marine Electronics as the sat dish had locked in the up position & refused to budge.  We couldn’t drive with it up so I had to get up on our ladder and loosen the nuts on the main shaft & lower the dish manually.  The tech reset the dish and it seemed to be working at the time.
After doing some shopping we headed for Fletcher Creek 40 klms north of Charters Towers going via Ross River Road then down the Gregory Development Road.  Other than a fairly steep range to cross the Ross River Rd was in very good condition while the Gregory was mainly single ragged edged bitumen, fortunately with very little traffic.
Strangely there were several camps set up on the north bank near the toilets and a dozen or so on the south bank but all located on the western side of the road.  So we camped on the eastern side and virtually had the area to ourselves.  This is a beautiful free camp with a one month stay limit.  But by the look of a few of them already set up, they plan on staying much longer.
Our bad luck hadn’t finished with us yet and the sat system couldn’t get a strong enough’s signal to pick up any channels so we contacted Springers via our satellite phone and they talked us through several procedures which failed to produce any results.  They believed it was a faulty Vast box so they arranged to send us a temporary replacement via express post to Charters Towers which should be hears in 3 days or so.
We then noted our power was not holding as good as it usually does, so I tested all the solar panels and found at least one was dead & another not producing much.  We were only getting about 17 amps at midday and when they’re all working properly it’s usually double that.
We also found that the new fridge was icing up and running constantly also draining the batteries further.  The only benefit was I got to give the generator a good run.
We had no choice but to move on to Charters Towers and get on a powered site somewhere until we received our new vast box.  We would then likely make our way back to Brisbane & get things sorted once again.  Bah hum bug…..

8 – 12 February 2014: Silkwood to Bluewater (Townsville)

On Saturday we went for a drive to Silkwood where we used to live 24 years earlier & visited Dina & Lou. They invited us to come & stay when we leave Babinda so we planned to return the next afternoon.
We drove to Cairns Saturday night for Greg’s 60th birthday party being held at Ridges Motel in Cairns. It absolutely poured down all the way with some guests being delayed by flooding coming from Townsville.  We enjoyed a great seafood buffet and ate far too much.
Sunday morning we moved on to Silkwood to spend a couple of nights with Dina & Lou.  We went to the Villa Monarco restaurant at Kurrimine Beach that night & enjoyed a 3 course BBQ buffet for $10 a head.  Great food & great friends made for a very enjoyable evening.
One thing about visiting the Campagnolos is they always seem to find new tropical exotic fruits for us to try.  These Italians really know their food & it’s a wonder they aren’t all hugely overweight, but they are very active people & have been hard workers all their lives.  They are the most welcoming & joyful people we know & have enjoyed catching up with them once again.
We left Silkwood on the Tuesday in search of sunshine as we were becoming water logged & the ants were taking over the van.  We called into the Frosty Mango for morning tea & I had a mango smoothie & Deb had a lychee ice cream & lemon sorbet.  Evil but nice!  We then pulled into the Bluewater Free Camp just north of Townsville.  It’s a great spot with toilets, dump point, tap water and surrounded by a beautiful park and a creek.  The water hole looks very inviting but I’m a little reluctant to jump in this close to the coast.  We also had the added bonus of sunshine & after all the rain you can almost see the grass growing.

3 – 7 February 2014: Babinda

While heading north through Cardwell we came across Debbie’s brother Greg & his wife Judy.  They were on their way to a meeting in Townsville overnight.  We had coffee with them & arranged to stay at their place in Babinda for a few days.
I’ve got to say the Bruce Hwy is in very good condition from Rockhampton through to Cardwell at present with the rest under quite a bit of road works.  Cardwell looks great with the beachfront all renewed after the previous cyclones.
We had the usual weather for this time of year with wet & humid days.  It was great catching up with Greg, Judy & family as it’s been quite a while since we’ve been up this way.  Judy took us for a drive & walk up to the Babinda Boulders that were flowing very well due to the rains.  We checked out Angie & Brads block with a huge shed that they are in the process of having closed in and converted to living quarters.
Friday, Greg & Judy headed into Cairns to stay for a few days to celebrate Greg’s 60th birthday.  We’ll  be joining them for dinner on the Saturday night.

2-3 February 2014: Heading North – St Lawrence, Carmila Beach & Guthalungara

On the road again heading north up the Bruce Hwy while Laurie & Helen went to 1770 for a couple of days to try & catch those elusive fish.  There was several stop & goes along the way which we really can’t complain about as the majority of this road is in very good condition, especially when compared to the Warrego Hwy.

We pulled into the St Lawrence Recreation Grounds for the night which had been recommended by many people.  We were not disappointed as the facilities were excellent & the wetlands were a beautiful backdrop.  There was also plenty of magpie geese due to the recent heavy rains. There is a donation box which I don’t have a problem with contributing to, but I doubt any of the backpackers in their wiz-bang vans did.

Along the Bruce Hwy the next day we were surrounded by heaps of water which was only half a metre or so below the road level.  Unfortunately we had a bright idea to go into Carmila Beach free camp & check it out while we had smoko.  There’s a track running parallel to the beach with lots of small tracks branching off leading to individual camp sites.  My advice is walk into the camp sites as they can be quite boggy, as I found out the hard way.  Well, I don’t really consider it as bogged as I got myself out by digging around the tyres & letting them down to 20psi.  This I call a momentary pause.

We  passed through numerous showers & pulled up at another great free camp/rest area at Guthalungara. In peak times I imagine this would be packed out quite early.  And guess what? We’re near a rail line again.  Just like back home.

28 – 29 January 2014: Mon Repos

We checked into The Absolute Waterfront Caravan Park at Bargara.  As the wind was howling we took one of the back sites.  It’s an old park but the facilities were clean & it was only about a 10 minute drive to Mon Repos.  The camp located at Mon Repos has closed as the owner is a greeny and doesn’t need the money anyway.

A visit to Bundy has to entail some stocking up on the local distillled beverages.  We also bought some fresh prawns and coral trout from the local seafood co-op, they were fantastic.
We arrived 30 minutes early at Mon Repos & were told that a nest of turtles had started hatching so we were let in early & got to see the tiny loggerheads emerge from the sand in day light.  They brought around a few for us to hold & take photos & I was quite amazed at how strong their little flippers were.  After about an hour and a half they had all come out & were being contained in a small mesh barrier.  We were formed into a guard of honour down to the water and they were released en mass. The ranger stood at the waters edge and they all headed towards the light and began their 8 year round the world trip.  It would then be another 18 or so years before it was their turn to lay eggs.  All the shells are then dug up and counted and logged, including about 12 that hadn’t developed.  A very special event and well worth the effort.

30 January – 2 February 2014: Lake Monduran

Travelled to Lake Monduran & stayed at the caravan park at the dam.  Unfortunately the free camp is no more and we were forced to pay $34 per night for a powered site. The facilities are good but it gets up my nose when they close the free camps & up the caravan park fees.

Laurie & Helen came to spend a few days with us as we were waiting for weather up north to settle from a Cat 2 cyclone.  Laurie had his tinny so we set out to catch some monster barra.  With permits and some fantastic lures we fished & fished & fished, but to no avail.  I don’t know what it is but when we fish together we don’t catch fish.

After losing a couple of lures to trees over 3 days Laurie decided to pack the boat up.  This was after he somehow dropped his best rod over the back of the boat.  We were in about 30ft of water so not surprisingly his attempts to snag it up were fruitless.  Just the same, there was some beautiful scenery out on the lake & it’s a great way to get out & appreciate it.

Look out fish hear we come!
Aaagh, the tranquility

January 2014: Lawnton to Hervey Bay

22 January to 28 January 2014

Left Lawnton Showgrounds & went straight through to Laurie & Helen’s at Pt Vernon in Hervey Bay. We went fishing one day at Toogoom and unfortunately caught nothing of legal size.  But it was a great day out in the boat just the same.  We rode our pushies to Urangan pier twice which was 25klm return. Had happy hours every day and a BBQ with some fellow Kedronners who were in the area.  We did several drive arounds looking at real estate which only confused us more.
Now we’re off to visit some friends in Maryborough then head up to Bundaberg to see the turtles hatching at Mon Repo.

21 December 2013: The Beginning of our Retirement – Jondaryan

Settlement day for the sale of our house was 23 December 2013. The previous week we packed what was left of our furniture, etc into a container and had it transported to the container hire facility for storage. Morning of the 23rd we moved our van to Lawnton Showgrounds – to be our base for the next couple of days.
We spent Christmas Day with family at Toowoomba then headed out to the Jondaryan wool shed on the 27th for a gathering of Kedronners for New Years celebrations.  New years eve was a fantastic night with a few ales under the belt we danced and laughed into the wee hours of 2014.
We then headed to Crows Nest & stayed in the caravan park for a few nights with Craig & Wendy. They went sightseeing and we did some house shopping & even made an offer on a two year old home. It all became a little complicated so we dropped the idea for now and decided to look around some more, but we both like the idea of living in the Toowoomba/Crows Nest area.
It was then down the range to Hunting Lodge Estate to camp by the creek for a couple of days.  The heat was horrendous and reached over 40c several times on this trip.
Since finishing work luck hasn’t been on our side with a list of things breaking down.
1: Hot water system leaking.  It was only 4 months old & the tank had split. Replaced under warranty.
2:   Compressor fridge icing up and struggling with heat. Fridge whisperer said it had a gas leak and we’d be better replacing it. $2,045 plus install which required cabinet to be made 200mm taller.
3:   Washing machine pouring water out while filling. Parts not available so new one required.  $345 plus install which was tricky as it also was a bit bigger.
4:   Satellite dish for TV fitted as planned months ago. $5,300.
5:   Van brakes had been coming on while climbing Toowoomba range & believed to be caused by increased heat under bonnet causing circuit breaker to fail.  New higher amperage one fitted.
6:   Cruiser blowing excessive smoke at times & lacking a little power.  Diesel specialist said car is running perfectly but I was the problem. (Deb tells me that all the time). Apparently I drive it too carefully and this caused some blockage of crap in the exhaust.  To remedy this I am to drive it harder and once a month or so to get out on the highway and redline it in 1st, 2nd & 3rd to clean it out.
7:  While getting the sat dish fitted I reversed back to hook the van up and ran over the strap attached to my kayak on the roof. This broke the kayak loader and put a significant ding in the left front guard.  I said a few choice words as this was getting beyond a joke.  $850 to have bumper tech come and repair this & a couple of small dents.
8:   Then, while driving into Chermside we began to smell something burning & thought it was another car.  The smell got stronger so we pulled over to check.  Opened the bonnet and found nothing. Opened the back door and saw flames coming out of the battery box behind the fridge.  A circuit breaker inside the lid came in contact with the terminal and shorted out.  I changed the circuit breaker & had it all replaced.

I don’t know how many Chinamen I’ve run over but enough’s enough!  This retirement is supposed to be fun, so Monday 20th January we pack up from Lawnton & head north towards Hervey Bay to stay with Laurie & Helen for a few days.  Let the fun begin!!!
